2007 ACCOMPLISHMENTS:BRAZILSuicide Prevention Care Fund supported the ministry of missionary John Bills, who is affiliated with Youth With a Mission and specializes in educating churches and groups about the realities of HIV/AIDS and how to minister effectively with those who are impacted by the disease. A major part of his work is also suicide prevention and training Christian counselors to recognize warning signs and help those vulnerable through their crises. He is based Brazil but travels the world in this itinerant ministry, holding training workshops, public seminars, speaking in churches, schools and universities, and counseling individuals personally. KENYASPCF made a grant toward start-up costs of a new orphanage for HIV/AIDS-afflicted children near Eldoret. Construction is underway, and when completed the facility will be able to offer a loving Christian environment to 20 children at a time. Many are utterly hopeless and make suicide attempts against their lives. MALAYSIASPCF supported the ministry of HIVHope, Malaysia and its Herb Hall Men’s Home in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to being a safe haven for up to 20 HIV/AIDS-infected residents at a time, the home’s directors provide individual counseling specifically addressing suicidal ideation and focusing on spiritual growth and life enrichment. UGANDASPCF provided financial support for operating costs of the Terry Duffy Home in Jinja, an outreach of He Intends Victory. Currently there are 12 residents, most of them widows or orphans who are utterly destitute and shunned by society. Consequently, they are greatly at risk. The home’s staff provide loving care and emphasize positive deterrents to suicide. UNITED STATESSPCF supported the suicide prevention programs of He Intends Victory, a Christian ministry for HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, headquartered in Irvine, California. HIV holds numerous seminars, workshops, and meetings in churches and schools each year and has public education, prevention, individual counseling, and support group programs in 18 states plus the District of Columbia (Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington) and 13 nations (Belize, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and Congo. SPCF made a grant to Love Lines Crisis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and its nationwide hotline (612/379-1199). Last year it fielded 46,400 calls from discouraged, often suicidal people, many of whom were at wit’s end trying to cope with difficult emotional and relationship problems. SPCF shipped a truckload of assorted baled clothing weighing 37,500 pounds to a Native American mission in Manuelito, New Mexico, to assist low-income Navajo families. Many children among the families suffer from neglect or abuse and are supervised by the courts or Child Protective Services. Fair market value was $225,000. |
